A massive disco ball peeked out from the center of the darkness over the College Street Music Hall stage Thursday night, which meant only one thing: there was going to be some dancing .
It meant another thing this time: LCD Soundsystem, the band that was going to be getting everyone dancing, was ready to perform for three nights – yes, three – at the venue.
That’s a lot of dancing. Fortunately, there are a lot of people ready to dance with LCD Soundsystem.
Let’s get a confession out of the way right away: This reporter, a huge fan of dance music, is not as familiar with this band, which hails from New York, has been a fan favorite since their debut in the early 2000s, and which left and then returned to the scene in the late 2010s to just as much success. Listening to their music prior to the show I recalled a few of their songs and was eager to here and see them live.
Spoiler alert: They did not disappoint.
Opening band Victoryland, which also hails from New York and are on tour with LCD Soundsystem, did their part to warm up the crowd. Julian McCannman led the six-piece band through selections from their most recent release My Heart Is A Room With No Cameras In It, which is also a line from a song on the album called No Cameras.
“I have so much love to give. My heart is a room with no cameras in it bound to fall down. Watch me fade out,” McCannman sang. But Victoryland, with their profound and personal lyrics, electronic rock indie pop vibe, and feverish and frantic live performance this band seems ready to do anything but fade away. Go give them some love back by checking them out.
“Stick around for the band after us,” joked McCannman between songs. “They’re just getting their start.” The lovefest that was the LCD Soundsystem started and ended with an audience erupting in joy and lasted a whopping two-hour set, during which time there were fans who barely rested, dancing to each and every song, even the couple of slower ones.
Fans joined along singing all of the songs, most loudly at first with the chorus of “Pow, Pow” early on in the show. “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House” got the hall rocking as well as “Losing My Edge,” with the eight band members trading off instruments during the set. There was plenty up there to trade off on, multiple synths and electronics, three drum sets and multiple percussion pieces. It was a music0making mecca.
Charismatic band leader James Murphy guided it all, holding everyone captive with his seemingly boundless energy, vocals, and occasional drumstick. With only a few minutes between the main set and the encore – which was five songs long and felt more like a mini- second set – the fans pretty much kept up with him and the rest of the band. Luckily, College Street Music Hall has the space for fans to move freely. The main level in front of the stage was quite packed, but everyone was cool about letting everyone else have their room to be. Each space on the lower level had dancers doing their moves, even the back of the venue where there are typically a few chairs set up had its own crew of shakers and movers. For someone who loves to dance but cannot always join in, it was a beautiful sight to behold.
Three members of Victoryland came out to join LCD Soundsystem for the first song of the encore, “North American Scum,” a rhythm-heavy lyrically scathing fan favorite that got everyone hyped up to end the show as high energy as it began. The highest-energy moments of the night came with the final two songs, “Dance Yrself Clean” and “All My Friends,” which caused the venue to seemingly shake on its foundation and solidified what I had already contemplated: This is a band that demands to be seen live. And as was mentioned beforehand, New Haven has two more chance to do just that – tonight and Saturday night. Grab all your friends, and go.
