Deadline Poet LindoYes checked out the Philly Faire, a three-day event held this year at the historic Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River, where he found himself a more active participant than he expected amid the scene of medieval confusion. Watch a video story of his time there above (including getting pelted with fluffy tomatoes in the stocks); read his poetic review to pictures below.

LindoYes with Renaissance Faire afficionado and apparent Prince impersonator Keith McKellar.

It was only $5 here and there

At the faire to find

Escape, relief and fun

Hoodlum, Poet, Nerd, Blerd

Roleplayer, Escape Artist, Person

Having fun at the faire

In all nerd culture this is

First and furthermore

For this hoodie-wearing poet

As animated as a cartoon

Who gets geeked over sci-fi, fantasy

In all nerd culture having

Second thoughts because

My nerdiness is unnoticed to a seasoned geek

Who visits conventions, avid gamer, cosplayer

Yet I adventured from the comfort of my couch

Where I play video games, watch anime

To the Renaissance Faire

Celtic magician Daniel GreenWolf.

Where Knights, Trolls, Elves, Magicians,

Queens, Kings, Royalty, and common folk

Gathered where

I, hoodlum

In Robin Hood times

Felt more familiarity than I expected

Role-playing what I desire in gaming:

Escape

Lost in a fantasy of self possession

Prompted by a popcorn vendor

I adventured among the village

Seeking to show all those who shame me

For my poetry

That while crunching kettle corn I could

Best them in archery

Seek wisdom from an Irish magician

Befriend a purple prince

The traffic director, who was named Morgue, also dressed up for the Faire.

I was less poet than escape artist

By the time the popcorn was done

What a relief, what an escape

A step out of my comfort zone

Into a well-worn world of novelty

All the geek things I’d done was footprints

Laying the groundwork for a nerdier me
