Polish Village Cafe

In the post-glow of Paczki Day in Hamtramck, it’s important to revisit one of the most storied restaurants in metro Detroit.
There’s no place quite like Polish Village Cafe.
The garden-level restaurant in an old hotel serves the most old world takes on Eastern European comfort grub. Grab yourself a 22 oz. of Żywiec (I had three, if we’re being honest), from one of the oldest breweries in Poland. Admire the atmosphere of feeling like you’ve entered a blind pig with the lighting of those buzzy Indian restaurants that compete for your money on the Lower East Side of New York City.
And, in true NYC Indian restaurant fashion, there’s a lesser competitor right down the street competing for your money (Polonia). In local Detroit parlance, Polish Village is the clear winner. If someone says Polonia is better, run.

There’s only one dish I get here: the everything dish. I’m talking about the Polish plate, which offers a little bit of everything to everyone. We’re talking some stuffed cabbage, a single potato and cheese pierogi (I ordered a dozen to go), a slice of smoked Polish sausage kielbasa (the snap on the skin of this thing is something to behold!), some kraut (perfectly sour) and mashed potatoes on the side.
Are you overwhelmed yet? Have another Żywiec and relax.
As so many new spots open up in the area, it’s important to go back to these cozy stalwarts that serve up something so simple yet so delicious, with unmatched customer service and cooks that look like they could beat your ass. (At least you can see in the kitchen, so you know it’s clean.)
This has been my post-Paczki Day spot for quite some time, but I’m learning that the food and service here are so good that I need to come back even when I’m not just following my own personal traditions.
Because this is traditional Eastern European comfort food done at the highest level in the best setting.
