Isaia Huron’s Philadelphia stop on his Mister Lovebomb tour was, by all definitions, an overwhelming success. For many types of shows, a rainy day can spell doom and gloom, but for an intimate and very sold out R&B show, it might’ve made it that much better. The crowd that squeezed into PhilaMoCA seemed just fine standing shoulder to shoulder to see the South Carolina crooner, and upon entrance one attendee noted how good everyone in the room smelled. It was probably all the couples that were plainly there for date night. The audience slowly filtered in before the room was packed from front to back, and fortunately, they didn’t have long to wait before Huron took the stage to a hearty round of applause.
Huron is endlessly charming. He’d consistently talk to individual members of the crowd both between and during songs, jokingly telling spectators whose voices caught his attention to move to other locations in the room in order to widen the overall sound from the audience. When he wasn’t getting one side of the room to sing louder than the other, he’d challenge everyone to sing long passages of songs on their own, subtly circumventing the fact that he was suffering from a mild head cold. He was very open about it, though, which only solicited sympathy from an already devoted group of listeners. More than once, he mentioned other artists, asking if they liked Shaggy or Beyoncé, before working “It Wasn’t Me” and “Me, Myself, And I” into his own works.
As Huron moved through his catalogue, including the Kehlani collab “See Right Through Me,” Philadelphia made it clear that every song is a fan favorite. After introducing his backing band (which he lovingly referred to as “The BEST Band,” after their names: Brandon, Ethan, Steph, and Thad) he moved into deep cuts from his now three-week old album. The album, Mister Lovebomb, shares its namesake with the tour and Huron himself, and is clearly going to be huge for him. Before running offstage to decompress before holding court for a meet and greet, he told the room that he’d be back in Philadelphia around August. If the panties left behind are any further indication, it’ll be in a much larger venue.
