When times get tough, the tough dress head-to-toe in pink and head to the dance floor. That seemed to be the spirit behind Solid Pink Disco, drag superstar Trixie Mattel’s high-voltage spectacular that transformed Oakland’s Fox Theater into a bubblegum-hued dreamscape last Friday night.

Decked out in sequins and polyester, a glittering crowd of thousands showed up ready to move. Before Trixie took the stage, warm-up acts DJs Adam Kraft and Mateo Segade and singer Snow Wife got us dancing and singing, and a standout performance by rising pop powerhouse VINCINT caused us to fall instantly in love.

“For those of you who don’t know me—I’m not Todrick Hall,” VINCINT joked, earning big laughs before slipping into a performance that had the entire venue in their thrall.

Best known from the first season of The Four, VINCINT connected with the crowd immediately. With a voice as rich as velvet and sincerity to match, they stepped down from the stage and into the crowd, serenading fans amid a hundred phone lights. It was one of those rare moments where a warm-up act steals part of the spotlight—and we wanted more. Sadly VINCINT wandered away far too quickly.

As the dance party kicked into full gear, Chappell Roan’s music and a crew of dazzling backup dancers kept the energy high. Messages of unity, acceptance, and queer liberation beamed from the screens, followed by a jarring—but cathartic—four-minute “hate exercise” à la 1984, featuring none other than Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The crowd booed, yelled and hissed on cue.

When Trixie finally arrived—with enormous fanfare and an even bigger beat—we were rewarded for our patience. “You all want to fuck me!” she shouted gleefully. “Well, all of you can!” And with that, the party went into overdrive. She twirled, joked, and reminded us all why we fell in love with her back in Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race—and why she won All Stars 3. The orca eyed queen has come a long way since then: with her shows with fellow contestant Katya Zamolodchikova, her albums, and cosmetics line, she is arguably one of the most successful contestants ever to graduate from the franchise.

Even if she was fashionably late, no one seemed to mind. This night was for escapism, joy, and pink. So much pink. In a world that feels especially heavy these days, Solid Pink Disco delivered exactly what we needed: a few hours to dance toward the rosy pink light.
