The level of intention, dedication, and communal support at this release party was unmatched.
KOTI, short for King of the Island, is a 23-year-old rising R&B star in Detroit, and his upcoming project Welcome to the Island may become my album of the year.
On Saturday night, he performed the project for a packed crowd at a loft on the city’s eastside. More than half of the songs featured other local rising R&B and rap artists including Quani3, Jace Preme, Dani Brasco, StanTheThird, Twuhny, Faith Sanaa, and more.
One of my favorite performances featured R&B artist F7ame, whose smooth vocals complemented KOTI’s beautifully on track “MY DRUG,” which compares intense romance to addiction.
Another standout moment for me was the second-to-last performance of the track “LAVISH,” featuring Cleveland rapper Malik X, who helped end the night with a burst of energy.
On multiple occasions, I’ve heard KOTI say something along the lines of, “If I go up, I’m bringing other Detroit artists with me.”
After releasing two albums in 2024, this project feels different. “This is my first serious project — more people are watching,” he said. That shift even shows in the title of the album: Welcome To The Island. While it is not his first project, it feels like the true welcome into KOTI’s world.
The fact that he chose to not only spotlight himself in it, but also so many other rising music stars in the city, is impressive for such a young artist. That was probably my favorite part of both the night and the album.
However, the even more impressive part of KOTI’s party, and his music overall, is the attention to detail.

The theme for the night was leopard print, and the attendees and artists all came to show out in style. KOTI even arrived on stage with a full Dominican blowout to really lean into his islander persona.
A leopard-print photo backdrop covered one wall, inflatable palm trees were spread around the space, and leis were handed out to every person who entered the room. He even had a merch table of KOTI shirts, leopard scarves, Welcome to the Island hats, and free gift bags for every attendee.
The branding and world-building for this project is some of the best I’ve seen, especially from an artist who is just starting out and does most of his work alone. Every aspect of the event made not just the artists on stage feel welcome with open arms, but everyone in the room.
KOTI knows what he’s doing — and he definitely deserves the recognition for it.
Welcome to the Island will be out on all streaming platforms this week. Don’t hesitate to give it a listen!
