$5, & Buried In The Bun

Is a $5 hot dog and a beer the new American dream in a crumbling economy?

I’m not here to ask big questions like that. I’m only here to use them as the lede for a story about discovering that my personal American dream is a $5 hot dog and a beer special.

That’s Clinton administration pricing! Never thought we’d see it again…

Part of the thrill here is watching these beefy boys slowly rotate on the hot dog machine situated in the corner of the bar. The buns are slapped on the top to be heated just so. There’s nothing worse than a cold bun on a warm dog, much like putting unheated syrup on a steaming pile of pancakes.

There’s no array of condiments here. Just ketchup or mustard. Don’t think you’re special! Because you’re not.

And then you throw in the ice cold Miller Lite in a can! For $5!

While your hot dog might take a minute to get ready (about 15 minutes), you can mortgage your dive bar future by cashing in on the beer immediately. A reminder to folks who haven’t been to Port Bar before – this is a cash only establishment. That’s a green flag for me trying to find a dive bar that fits my active lifestyle.

Port Bar is deliciously off the map when it comes to dive bars that locals rave about. It’s quiet. I’s dank. It’s filled with aging Eastern Europeans talking about how Hamtramck used to be. It’s not a buzzed-out sexy dive. It’s a low-key spot to fade into in the middle of the afternoon when you don’t want to run into anybody.

I didn’t even want to write about their latest special. I didn’t want to tell you!

I am, however, always looking for a good time and for others to join me.

So, bring at least $5 for your dog and your beer and let’s skip work and shoot a game of pool together at Port Bar.
