G-Flip is a rare kind of performer. They don’t just stick to the center of the stage with a single instrument or microphone in hand; they are everywhere all at once. One second they’re singing their heart out, the next they’re blowing up the saxophone, the next they’re doing double duty on the drums while singing, then the next they’re picking up the guitar, first electric then acoustic.

I discovered G-Flip in a pretty unconventional way. I became aware of them while watching the Netflix reality real estate show “Selling Sunset." Years back, G started dating a realtor from the show (Chrishell Stause, their current spouse). One of the episodes told the story of how Chrishelle, who is also an actress, starred in one of G’s music videos — I later looked G up and discovered they happened to be stopping through Philly on tour. So I secured tickets for their October 2023 show, and got an entertainment experience that far outweighed watching reality T.V. from the couch.

That concert took place at The Foundry, the small upstairs venue above the Fillmore in Fishtown, Philadelphia. Fast forward two years later to this October and they were packing the downstairs of Union Transfer, which is almost four times the size of The Foundry. One thing that hasn't changed over time is how much G clearly enjoys interacting with their fans. Their house rules have stayed the same: #1 is “Don’t be a Dickhead!”; #8 is “Sing with me with your full chest." No matter the crowd size, a concert with G always feels like an intimate show.

Most of the songs performed this week are from their new album “Dream Ride.” Though it was only just released a month ago, on Sept. 5th of this year, everyone in the audience knew the words and did indeed sing along to each track with their full chests. Some older favorites were sprinkled in too, like the love song G wrote about their now wife called “Be Your Man,” which was featured on the 2023 album Drummer. They also covered “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift, which, as a die-hard Swiftie, I loved; I realized somewhat ironically that it might be the closest I'd ever get Taylor live.

Overall, it was a 10/10 rock show for all ages. The quality of G's performance was truly illuminated by Union Transfer's massive stage — it gave G the chance to take up the full space, and to flip their generous energy into a prime real estate performance.
