Riva Starr & Soul Speech
“Know You Love Me” (Flight Facilities Remix)
Snatch Records
What a delicious piece of jazzy house music!
The stomping beat at the beginning of “Know You Love Me” has this vinyl fuzz to it, like you can hear a brush being scraped across the snare. This is another example of above-average electronic music figuring out how to make you feel like you’re in the studio where it was recorded: like there are some analog, real human elements to all of this dance floor glitz and glamour.
From there, jazzy chords slowly introduce themselves before our vocalist muses on a complicated situationship:
“Always playing tease / playing hard to please”
There’s a long history of DJs and producers leaving the singer unaccredited. It’s like having a star player on the team, but you can’t see the name on the back of the jersey. There’s a bit of competition of who has the hottest vocals, the hottest mix and, in this case, the hottest remix courtesy of Australian duo Flight Facilities.
“I’m leaving it up to you / even though you’re confused / I know you love me”
Are we breaking up or getting back on the dance floor… together?
The tension of “will they / won’t they” brings these lyrics and vocals to a cut above the usual jazz-house tracks I come across. It makes sense – I’ve been infatuated with Riva Starr and the tracks they’ve released via their excellent Keep Me On The Dancefloor album.
The remix from Flight Facilities extends the life of that album, and has me ready to break out of winter and hit the pool party.
