Resavoir
“Far Cry”
L’UNIVERS
To listen to Resavoir’s “Far Cry” is to step into a dream, into a cinematic climax of a movie soundtrack, to step into a high-end spa with exceptionally good music taste.
The wavy, dream-like vibes make sense. The new album from Resavoir mastermind Will Miller is called Themes For Dreams – and I was writing about how this song felt before I even knew the thematic arc of his latest project! Mission accomplished!
For this album, Miller is ditching drums and embracing ambient tunes (not that a song needs to abandon drums to be considered ambient). Miller is a trumpet player who has stretched out his wings in recent years as a producer and composer, working with marquee names like SZA, Justin Bieber and Whitney.
If you dig big-time artists like that, be sure to comb through the liner notes and contributors section of their records to see who helped make that sound. On most mainstream releases, they’re tapping into the next generation of artists to craft the sound of the future.
“Far Cry” it opens with gentle chords that could be pulled right out of a video game. When the synth comes wobbling in (is it strings made to sound like a synth? Is it the other way around?), it becomes much larger than the initial lullaby that it’s presenting itself to be.
This is music that you’d expect to hear when the main character of a movie (or a video game) is wistfully staring out a window into a dark, rainy night, contemplating what it all means.
For me, it means I’m excited to hear the full upcoming project by Resavoir, who is one of the most exciting musicians working out of Chicago today.
