Glyders
“Stone Shadow”
Drag City (pre-order the album here)
There’s often this credo I hear about the “death of rock ‘n roll,” how there simply isn’t music “like that” made anymore. It’s spoken like it's the end of times for music, for bands, for everyone.
This, of course, is far from the truth. But maybe the continued existence of bands who are still shredding like the classic rock days isn’t getting into the right ears.
Then a Chicago band like Glyders rolls into your headphones, all angular fury with sharp guitar stabs and emulating the glam-rock fuzz of T. Rex with a contemporary feel and a little more of a sci-fi, punk weirdo edge to it.
That’s all packaged perfectly on “Stone Shadow,” a groovy garage rocker lead single that’ll appear on their upcoming sophomore album, “Forever,” out Nov. 21 on legendary Chicago label Drag City. A true product of Chicago (written there, mixed there), it was also recorded in the band’s own studio -- another lovely addition to their DIY aesthetic.
Will it save rock ‘n roll? Probably not -- but the argument here is that it didn’t need saving. There’s plenty of bands like Glyders carrying the torch for a new generation, mixing a sense of psychedelic texture with the straight-ahead muscle of power chords and punk.
Not everyone is trying to become a DJ. Bands like Glyders are still keeping it very much plugged in and in the garage.
