Philly's Chinese Lantern Festival, originally planned to go through Aug. 15, has now been extended to Aug. 30 — granting Philadelphians an extra two weeks to take in the festivities of light installations, performances, local food vendors, and more. While many of the light installations are for viewing only, several of the pieces contain an interactive component, such as allowing visitors to control the intensity of light by hitting a drum or pedaling a stationary bike to get a cycling panda to match your movements. This year there was an emphasis on animals from around the world, with many light displays highlighting wildlife across the globe. There were also a few Philly-centered works, like one celebrating the World Cup earlier this summer. I stopped at Tom's Dim Sum in Chinatown before going to the festival; otherwise I would have tried some of the food options available like Oishii, Sang Kee, and authentic Chinese-cuisine juggernaut Chickie's & Pete's.

While the various light installations are what lure many attendees in, for me the true attraction has always been the performances that showcase the diverse performing art styles of China that go back centuries. I've attended the lantern festival many times throughout the years and each time I'm blown away by the selection of performers. A constant favorite of mine has always been the bian lian (or "face-changing") show, which features an eccentric performer wowing the crowd by changing their masks so fast that it's hard to comprehend. "Blink and you'll miss it" doesn't even begin to cover the speed and precision displayed by the bian lian performer. Even photos don't do it justice, so it's something that I recommend witnessing with your own eyes. A close second in my favorite performances would have to be the foot juggler. Juggling with your hands seems difficult enough, so seeing someone with enough balance and core strength to do it with their feet was really impressive. Speaking of core strength, the "space walking" performer was also pretty magical with a cosmic take on pole-dancing.

With just over a week left, the Chinese Lantern Festival is a perfect choice for a summer night out before it's gone again for another year. Find out more info about the festival here.
