Dallas-based gospel artist Canaan James Hill drew a lively crowd at the Dr. LaVonne M. Sheffield Bridge Center Library. This event is part of a larger series hosted by DABO Detroit, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating accessibility within the community. After the 17-year-old gained national attention on Season 23 of “American Idol,” locals were excited to meet him in person and experience his performance live. Known for his authenticity and heartfelt worship, Hill has inspired audiences across the country. His uplifting voice and powerful message brought that same joy and spirit to Detroit.

Canaan James Hill shared how grateful he felt to be part of the event: “...People don’t have to show you the kind of love and support that they do. When they do, you have to be thankful, and that’s exactly what I am. I recognize that it’s nobody but God, because all I want to do is lift up the name of Jesus. So to receive love and support through doing that is really a blessing to me.” - Canaan James Hill

When Rochelle Williams, who’s part of Detroit’s Triumph Church community, heard about the event, she knew she couldn’t miss it. “I saw the gentleman on American Idol. He had a wonderful voice, and so I wanted to come out. You can just feel his spirit. I had a wonderful time.” - Rochelle Williams

Michael Wimbush, who grew up in Detroit, says he’s been attending many of DABO’s community events: “Canaan’s music took me back. Wimbush said. “I was surprised by him. I didn't expect that from a younger person, especially a teenager. Him being young motivates me, and that's definitely going to inspire me throughout the entire week”. - Michael Wimbush

Cynthia Cuffie-Baker, who grew up in Detroit, has always had a love for church and gospel music: “I’ve been in the church all my life,” she said. “I love gospel music, and I’m just so thankful I was able to come out tonight and experience this.”- Cynthia Cuffie Baker
